The film I chose to make a scene analysis on was Bohemian Rhapsody. This film was made in 2018 and is a biographical drama film about Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the British rock band Queen. It was directed by Bryan Singer from a screenplay by Anthony McCarten, and produced by Graham King and Queen manager Jim Beach. Bohemian Rhapsody is based on the true story of Queen’s journey from the start of the rock band to their now-legendary band. Freddie Mercury defies stereotypes and convention to become one of history’s most beloved entertainers. The band’s revolutionary sound and popular songs lead to Queen’s meteoric rise in the 1970s. After leaving the group to pursue a solo career, Mercury reunites with Queen for the benefit concert Live Aid resulting in one of the greatest performances in rock ‘n’ roll history. Although, this movie won 4 Oscars, and particularly Best Film Editing, others disagree. Through doing research, I noticed that in once scene, Queen’s first meeting with their eventual manager, John Reid, the scene lasts 104 seconds. This scene has 60 cuts, which makes for an average shot length of 1.8 seconds. This shot length is faster than even some shot lengths in action movies. It is not a good sign when a scene of people talking around a table has more rapid-fire editing’s than an action movie. During this scene, these several cuts have no purpose whatsoever This editing shows that the shot for shot pattern is a bit overboard. As well as this, the editing does not properly match up with the characters eye lines and body positions, having the film look distorted for the person watching the film. I have watched this movie several times and have not noticed it when it is united with the move. But once I watched the scene alone, I was able to focus and notice that this scene has several clips pasted into one. It makes the scene look choppy and not very fluent. I do love this movie and this scene did not ruin it for me. It definitely would have made it a better movie if they did not chop up the scene and unit it. There were different ways to approach this scene that could have made it look more fluent. They should have taken these approaches so that the scene flowed without question. This was still an amazing film, but the editing could have been better.
